  • Summary

How was the dragon motif made?

The Métiers d’Art “Les Dragons” Guilloché motif was created by alternately using two machines: one to engine-turn straight lines; and the other to produce curves and circles as if on a lathe.

The original combination of these two techniques has made it possible to create non-geometrical patterns unlike anything that has been done before.

The new key feature of this Guilloché work is the design, composed of irregular lines and a multitude of details, which takes guilloché well beyond its traditional role as an abstract geometrical decoration to achieve the status of a figurative art in its own right.

This interpretation of Guilloché engraving calls for exceptional dexterity on the part of the Guilloché specialist and also demands a good deal of time. In order to bring out each detail, the dragon motif was metallized in various colours that highlight the intricacies and enhance readability.
