In 2012 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak the manufacture in Le Brassus is offering eight new models entirely in harmony with the identity codes of the original collection and the daring minds that decided, 40 years ago, to set out to conquer the world with an entirely unprecedented sports watch.

There is a before and after the Royal Oak in the history of modern horology.

Launched by Audemars Piguet in 1972, the first prestige sports watch was already ahead of its time.

Legend has it that it was designed overnight.

FROM AVANT-GARDE TO ICON

The story begins with one strong idea:

To offer a prestigious extra-thin mechanical movement housed inside a steel case.

The challenge was daring enough to ensure that very few observers would have been prepared to wager on the success of this unconventional watch presented by the Manufacture Audemars Piguet at the Basel Fair in the spring of 1972.
